Old, failing siding costs you more the longer it stays up. SOS Roofing and Siding helps Des Plaines homeowners understand their options, choose the right material, and complete replacement with minimal disruption.
When to Replace
Catching these warning signs early puts you in control of the project and the budget. If you recognize more than two of these on your home, it's time to call SOS Roofing and Siding for an honest assessment.
Blistering means the bond between your siding and its backing has failed, usually due to water or heat. Once panels start blistering, replacement is the practical solution.
When your siding's color has deteriorated past the point that a fresh coat of paint would help, the material itself has reached the end of its useful life.
Sections that are pulling away from the wall or visibly bowing have lost their structural integrity. This problem gets worse with each weather cycle.
Any gap you can see between panels or at trim intersections is a point where your exterior envelope has failed. These rarely stay small on their own.
Siding that needs paint every two to three years is absorbing moisture and swelling, which breaks the paint bond. The fix isn't a better paint product — it's new siding.
Old siding that has expanded and contracted through years of weather cycles often develops micro-gaps that are invisible to the eye but significant from an energy efficiency standpoint.
What Sets Our Team Apart
We work in Des Plaines, IL's specific climate conditions every day. Our material recommendations are based on what we've seen perform well locally — not a national catalog.
Our estimates are written and itemized. We explain what's included, what's not, and why — and we don't pressure you to sign the same day. You deserve time to make an informed decision.
The people who gave you the estimate are the people who show up for installation. No handoffs to outside crews, no inconsistency in workmanship standards.
Every job ends with a complete cleanup of old siding material, fasteners, and packaging. Your yard and driveway will be clear before we leave — that's a standard part of what we do.

The Full Picture
The conversation around Siding Replacement often starts with a cost question, but experienced Des Plaines homeowners quickly learn that the real question is about timing. Keeping deteriorating siding on a home longer than it should stay there doesn't preserve the money you're trying to save — it compounds the cost. What starts as weathered, faded panels can become a moisture infiltration problem that reaches your sheathing, your insulation, and eventually your interior walls. At that point, the project costs significantly more than a straightforward replacement would have.
From an energy efficiency standpoint, new siding can make a meaningful difference to how your home performs year-round. This is especially true when you choose an insulated product that adds continuous foam backing beneath the panel layer. Continuous insulation eliminates thermal bridging at framing members, which is a significant source of heat loss in typical wall assemblies. Des Plaines homeowners who upgrade to insulated siding often notice a reduction in how hard their heating and cooling systems run during seasonal extremes — though we're careful never to project specific savings figures since results vary by home.
Steel siding is a growing category we see more often now, particularly on modern-style homes and in exposed, high-wind locations across Des Plaines, IL. Steel won't crack on impact the way vinyl can, it's non-combustible, and it's virtually impervious to moisture once properly installed and painted. The trade-offs are cost and the need for proper paint maintenance to prevent surface oxidation at any scratches or cut edges over time.
A typical single-story home in the Des Plaines area sees installation begin and reach a visible stage of progress on the first day. Most projects wrap within two to four days depending on the home's size and the extent of any prep work needed. We wrap up each day with a site cleanup pass so the property stays reasonably organized throughout the project. At completion, we do a full walkthrough with you and address anything that needs attention before we call the job done.
For homeowners in Des Plaines who are navigating the decision between contractors, we recommend asking every bidder for a few specific things: a copy of their liability insurance certificate and workers' compensation documentation, a written estimate that itemizes labor and materials separately, and references from similar projects completed in your area. Contractors who hesitate on any of those requests should be treated with caution. The siding replacement market has a reasonable number of operators who cut corners on insurance or substrate preparation in ways that create expensive problems down the road for homeowners. SOS Roofing and Siding provides all documentation before any project starts and is happy to connect you with past clients in Des Plaines and across Des Plaines, IL.
